Lesson 1:
When did science begin? 2,500 years before Christ there were men in Egypt who tried to figure out cures to diseases, but they just guessed how to do this. It was not really science, because they just guessed and did trial and error. People say that true science began around 600BC with a man named Thales (THAY-leez). He was a philosopher in Ancient Greece. Thales travelled to Egypt to learn from them, because they were really good at math. Thales wanted to figure out a lot of scientific truths, and he used math to do that. He found out that if you measure the shadows of things, you can use math to figure out the height of really tall things like pyramids, buildings, and trees.
Lesson 2:
Thales as a great scientist. He lived in Greece. Back then, math was considered the same thing as science, but now it is considered to be separate. Thales had a lot of interesting thoughts about how things worked and what was true. For example, he thought that everything was made of water, and that eventually everything would turn back into water. He was not completely wrong, because water is a big part of lots of things. You can see this is true if you take a candle, light it, and put a class cup on top of it. You will see some fog form on the glass. If you remove the glass you will see the fog slowly disappear.
